Renal tumour microwave ablation

This video demonstrates microwave ablation of a small renal tumour using the Acculis Microwave Tissue Ablation (MTA) system by Microsulis .   The procedure is identical to RF ablation but quicker.   In our limited experience with the device it also appears to less painful.   Dr Phil Haslam Consultant Interventional Radiologist, Freeman Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne

This video was taken using a laparoscopic camera and demonstrates the Microsulis Acculis Microwave Tissue Ablation (MTA) system in use during open surgery. The patient had a solitary kidney due nephrectomy for RCC some years before. The remaining kidney developed multiple tumours, a larger tumour in the upper pole and multiple small tumours in the lower pole. We decided to perform an open partial nephrectomy of the upper pole and use ablation for the lower pole. We chose intraoperative ultrasound guided microwave ablation for the multiple small tumours.
