Description

From Which Medical Device

The Conserve Plus is a hip resurfacing device from Wright Medical which obtained FDA approval in 2009. The socket is manufactured from cast cobalt-chrome and it has a sintered porous coating for cementless fixation. The geometry of the socket includes a 170 degree coverage angle, and the edge of the socket is rounded slightly which may help prevent problems with impingement if the front edge of the socket is uncovered. There is a dysplasia socket version (the Quadrafix) which has a flange with three screw holes for additional fixation.

The femoral component allows for a 1 mm cement mantle after head preparation, compared to line-to-line reaming of the Birmingham hip resurfacing. This may help cement penetration.

The device was the seventh most implanted in the England and Wales National Joint Registry in 2008, with 4% of the market, and has an ODEP 5A rating. Results from a single centre showed 95.2% survivorship at 5 years (Amstutz and Le Duff 2008), and an 88.5% survivorship of the first 100 hips from the same centre (Amstutz et al 2010).
