Description

From Which Medical Device

The Novae Dual Mobility Cup is designed to reduce the risk of dislocation in patients at high risk including those with a history of dislocation, revision surgery and major tumour resection.

Socket options include cemented (the "Stick"), uncemented with an HA coating (the "Sunfit") and versions with a plate for a single screw ("Evolution") and more extensive fixation plates ("Coptos").

The uncemented socket is hemispherical with an expanded peripheral rim and with a 3mm cylindrical extension around the base of the hemisphere which increases the jump distance for dislocation.

22.2mm, 28mm and 32mm options are available for the inner polyethylene liner

In a study of 240 hips over 22 years by Boyer, the 22 year survival rate was 74%. There were no dislocations. Leiber-Wackenheim preferred hydroxyapatite coated sockets to porous metallic substrate because of periacetabular lucency on radiographs. In a series by Tarasevicius, there were no dislocations in 42 patients undergoing dual mobility arthroplasty for hip fracture.

Primary total hip arthroplasty with dual mobility socket to prevent dislocation: a 22-year follow-up of 240 hips. Treatment of recurrent THR dislocation using of a cementless dual-mobility cup: a 59 cases series with a mean 8 years' follow-up.

This device is distributed by Orthodynamics.
