Description

From Which Medical Device

The Oxford Partial Knee from Biomet is a unicondylar knee replacement system which represents an evolution of the original meniscal arthroplasty. The presently available Phase 3 device includes 5 sizes of femoral component, an anatomically shaped tibial component, redesigned meniscal bearings to minimise impingement and a minimally invasive technique.

The femoral and tibial components are cast cobalt chromium molybdenum alloy, and the meniscal bearings are ultra high molecular weight polyethylene.

Patient choice is critical for the success of the device, and critera include intact cruciate ligaments, a well preserved lateral compartment and minimal varus deformity such that medial collateral ligament release is not required. The device is not recommended in inflammatory arthritis or for use in the lateral compartment.

Signature customised jigs are available for the Oxford Partial Knee.

In the 2012 NJR report, the Oxford Partial Knee was used in 4,648 of 6,832 procedures, comprising 68% of the market in England and Wales, and a seven year revision rate of 9.61% (CI 8.96 to 10.30%). This was higher than the MG Uni knee (6.64%), but lower than the Preservation knee (14.25%).
