Description

From Which Medical Device

The TaperLoc Microplasty from Biomet is a short femoral stem which is essentially a shortened version of the Taperloc stem (35mm shorter). This is a collarless, flat tapered wedge design, made from porous, plasma sprayed titanium.

Lombardi et al give some useful advice for insertion. They suggest that short stem devices require 1 or 2 diameter sizes larger than their long-stem counterparts, and suggest driving the component into valgus during insertion. Components usually sit prouder than the relevant trials. Their series of over 600 hips included one femoral perforation, one subsiding stem, and five periprosthetic fractures, with promising early results. This series is not yet published to our knowledge and there is a conflict of interest statement from the author. A clinical trial is ongoing.

Biomet also offer the Balance Microplasty hip stem.
