Description

From Which Medical Device

The MITCH hip resurfacing system is a metal on metal hip resurfacing device manufactured by Finsbury for Stryker. The bearing is a high precision ‘as cast’ high carbon cobalt chrome bearing. Finsbury has experience of hip resurfacing systems and markets its own system (the ADEPT hip). The cup has a plasma sprayed rough titanium layer with a plasma sprayed hydroxyapatite layer.

Perceived benefits include:

  • An internal 2 degree conical taper inside the head, intended to provide a complete cement mantle of the correct thickness
  • The reduction of distal loading which may reduce the risk of neck thinning.
  • A variable offset bore in the socket which increases the amount of coverage, particularly for smaller sizes.

The 6th report of the UK National Joint registry gave a market share of less than 1% to the device. There are no published results for this implant and it is rated pre-entry by ODEP.

It is not available in the US and not FDA approved at the present time. Stryker has distributed the Cormet hip resurfacing (by Corin) in the USA since 2007, which was the first such device to gain FDA approval.
