Description

From Which Medical Device

The Trilogy Acetabular Cup system from Zimmer is an uncemented socket which is an evolution of the Harris-Galante and HGP II cup designs. Options include a uni-hole shell, which allows visual confirmation of seating, a non-holed shell, cluster hole, multi hole and spiked shell configurations.

The standard socket has a fibre metal coating on the bone contact surface with or without HA and a trabecular metal variant is available.

Liners include ceramic (Trilogy AB /Alternate Bearing), Longevity cross linked polyethylene and constrained variants.

The socket is a true hemisphere,  and socket size represents the true external diameter of the shell. Appropriate underreaming is therefore recommended depending on bone quality. The shell has a locking ring for the liner which provides straightforward confirmation of accurate liner seating.

In the 2012 National Joint Registry report, the Trilogy socket appeared to be losing market share compared to the Pinnacle and Trident sockets.  The Zimmer CPT/Trilogy hybrid combination had the lowest 7 year revision rate (not statistically significant) at 1.96% compared with 2.01% for the Trident/Exeter combination.  The socket has an ODEP 7A rating.
