The Carotid WALLSTENT (CWS) and Filter-Wire EZ (FWEZ) embolic protection devices for use in carotid arterial stenting (CAS) were newly approved for national health insurance coverage in Japan in April 2010. This article describes our initial experience of CAS using the CWS and FWEZ.

The authors studied fifty patients with acute stroke and large artery occlusions.
They concluded: Acute extracranial stenting with the Wallstent combined with intracranial Solitaire-based thrombectomy is safe and may lead to an improvement in neurological outcome in patients with an otherwise poor prognosis under i.v. thrombolysis alone.
