The ProDisc II is an intervertebral disc replacement for the lumbar spine. It comprises two porous coated cobalt-chrome end plates and a convex polyethylene core. Each end plate has a central anchoring core and two spikes to ensure early stability. The device is indicated for advanced disc degeneration.

Park et al have reported long term outcomes for 35 patients and report a 71% clinical success rate.¹Delamarter et al compared two level use of the ProDisc-L with circumferential arthrodesis and reported better outcomes (SF36, Oswestry Disability Indices and patient reported satisfaction) in the former group.²The UK body NICE has published guidance on intervertebral replacement in the lumbar spine.³ van den Eerenbeemt et al have published a systematic review of the literature on total disc replacement which calls for long term randomised controlled trials.⁴
