I have been using this device for several years. It seldom gives me significant information that alters my anesthetic techniques. One exception is for TIVA anesthetics (usually Propofol/Ketamine with small amounts of narcotics) I find it useful to determine appropriate dosing. I also use the EMG tracing to help determine appropriate levels. The learning curve is steep, guidelines are not readily available so it requires experience to become competent. My one objection is the electrodes are not very reliable and are outrageously expensive.

I agree Phil. I dont think it will ever substitute for full monitoring with appropriate trained personnel. Currently I am not aware of the use of BIS outside operating theatres or in cases of sedation only.

Thanks Avi. Is there a role for BIS in monitoring sedated patients?
I am a believer in dedicated nurse monitoring (along with oximetry, ecg and BP), but I know there are real advocates of this.

BIS appears to be a useful monitor in selected cases only eg during TIVA. There are limitations which limits its general applicability. It is not a replacement for standard monitoring and it appears to add minimal advantage in routine cases.
