One of our latest reviews focuses on the Exeter Hip stem. It is poignant timing since hip replacement surgery recently celebrated its 50th anniversary on 23rd November and the Exeter Hip has been in clinical use for over 30 of those years. The assessment includes a series of informative images is based upon the experience of the author, Mr Jim Holland, a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Freeman Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK.

With an excellent track record the Exeter Hip is considered by many surgeons to be the ‘Rolls-Royce’ of hip stem devices associated with ‘gold-standard’ surgery. Mr. Holland’s review refers to the excellent results for the Exeter stem in the National Joint Registry (reference NJR data). He reports a similar personal experience of 15 years and that none of the 2000 or so Primary THR Exeter stems performed in this time have been revised for aseptic loosening. A pretty good record!

We are delighted to publish Mr Holland’s review as it contains invaluable and practical advice about the use of the Exeter stem in challenging clinical scenarios. This is the kind of advice that Which Medical Device aims to share between clinicians.

The National Joint Registry has monitored the performance of hip replacement implants since 2003 and the organisation, approaching its 10th anniversary, now holds a rich data resource that can offer robust analysis of the performance of implant devices and effectiveness of surgical techniques.

Recently, the Healthcare Quality Improvement Partnership quoted NJR National Lead Elaine Young as saying, "We are reminded today of the significant contribution hip replacement surgery has made to quality of life for so many people. The NJR's role is to ensure that continues to happen. Through the collection of data and the monitoring of implants, surgeons and hospitals, we are able to support the improvement of joint replacement surgery for patients."
