New MHRA alert for metal-on-metal hip replacements

Today (28/02/2012) the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) issued fresh advice to clinicians, following earlier fears for the safety of metal-on-metal (MoM) hip replacements. According to the MHRA, patients with a particular type of metal-on-metal hip replacement should be monitored annually for the life of the hip replacement, and not just for the minimum 5 year post-operative period originally stated in April 2010.

The updated advice features in a new MHRA Medical Device Alert issued to clinicians managing patients with metal-on-metal hip implants, and aims to minimise the risk of such individuals requiring further surgery to correct complications.
