Expanded FDA clearance for surgical sealer

MedGadget.com reports that Covidien has gained FDA approval to market its LigaSure small jaw instrument, an open sealer/divider, for use in head and neck procedures.

Apparently, the device delivers energy to the tip 3,333 times per second which enables it to seal vessel walls without causing heat damage to surrounding tissue. The article says that the jaw mechanism can be used independent of sealing which enables cutting and blunt dissection. Energy delivery is activated with a hand or foot switch.

The LigaSure small jaw instrument was cleared last year in the U.S. for general surgery.
