An article in the US Star Tribune reports that medical device manufacturer, St. Jude Medical, has achieved the CE Mark for the company's range of Assura implantable cardioverter defibrillators. The devices are designed to deliver high levels of energy to the heart while minimising unexpected shocks.

According to St. Jude Medical, the ICDs can generate 40 joules of energy which they say is the highest amount of energy that can shock a heart back into rhythm. Apparently, the devices also feature an algorithm based technology to prevent them from accidently shocking the heart.
