Are National Registries a Solution to Robotic Technology Evaluation & Innovation?

A recent article in the BMJ suggests that national registries may be a solution to evaluating robotic technology more thoroughly and questions what evidence is available to support the use of the technology in surgery.

It says that despite concerns over safety, effectiveness and costs, new devices and technologies for surgery are constantly and uncontrollably developed. These new technologies are often rapidly adopted with minimal scientific evidence, the da Vinci robotic system which was approved by the US FDA in 2000 being, they say, one such example.
