This video demonstrates the trocar technique that can be used with ultrasound guidance for nephrostomy insertion. Useful in well dilated systems and on ITU where screening may not be available. I usually perform this with the patient prone. Its possible with the patient on their side but the kidney usually then falls away from you and it is more difficult.

You must add procedure in patients too ill to lie on stomach !
