From Which Medical Device

D*Clot (distributed in the UK by Mermaid Medical) is an OTW thrombectomy and atherectomy system. Dr Phil Haslam, Consultant Interventional Radiologist and Which Medical Device Founder first saw this device at CIRSE 2016, in Barcelona.

He said, "This seems to be a more aggressive approach with a rotating curved tip which rotates macerating the occlusion and aspirating the particles. The device can pass over an 0.018” guidewire. If the wire is withdrawn into the device then the rotating tip can spin with a wider diameter for larger vessels. The battery pack is a separate and attached to the handle (containing the motor) with a wire. A 30cc syringe is supplied that can be locked with suction applied then a clamp on the tube can be opened to aspirate using this suction."

The device fits through a 6F or 7F introducer and is available in 65 to 130cm versions.

This type of device, along with the CLEANERXT Rotational Thrombectomy System from Argon Medical Devices which was also shown at CIRSE are obvious competitors for the Angiojet. They are considerably less expensive, but efficacy of all these devices is questionable as I am not aware of any trials that have compared them. Personal preference and operator skill will always be factors here.

Dr Haslam saw D*Clot again at the British Society of Interventional Radiology Annual Meeting in November 2018. Phil said, "This battery operated device macerates the thrombus and allows suction aspiration of the thrombus. Larger lumens are accommodated as the device has a variable diameter of rotation depending on how much it is restricted in the lumen."
