Description

From Which Medical Device

This system was shown at CIRSE 2016, in Barcelona.  Dual power cells increase duration and run time, maintaining torque through tortuosity and improved drive shaft design increases efficiency of power transfer and torque. The device has FDA clearance.

It is comprised of a small ‘spiral/helical’ rotating device that extends from the end of the guiding catheter. Suction can then be applied manually from a syringe to the side port of the catheter aspirating the thrombus. The end of the device is fairly soft allowing it to be used as a guidewire to advance the device.

The ‘sinusoidal wire’ is said to macerate clot without vessel wall damage but the rotation can allow vessel wall contact in even large veins and aneurysmal sections of dialysis fistulae.

The handle of the device contains the motor and power supply. There are two versions: 6F (9mm sinusoid) and 7F (15mm sinusoid) and it comes in 65cm and 135cm lengths.

This type of device, along with the D.Clot from Mermaid Medical, an OTW thrombectomy and atherectomy system which was also shown at CIRSE.  They are obvious competitors for the Angiojet. They are considerably less expensive, but efficacy of all these devices is questionable as I am not aware of any trials that have compared them. Personal preference and operator skill will always be factors here.
