Description

From Which Medical Device

The MaioRegen Biojoint System is a trilaminate matrix which is intended to be inserted into osteochondral defects and replace the missing articular cartilage. The deepest layer is hydroxyapatite, the superficial layer is equine type 1 collagen, and the intermediate layer is a mixture of the two, which gives the substance a “tide mark”. The matrix is easy to handle (having handled it at a trade show) and can be cut to shape. It absorbs fluid, swells and becomes stable in the defect. The matrix is said to enhance cellular chemotaxis, encouraging colonization by bone marrow derived progenitor cells. The matrix subsequently reabsorbs, leaving (in animal studies) histologically fairly normal articular cartilage.

There are no results from human studies at present, but a clinical trial is ongoing.

MaioRegen is distributed in the UK by jri Orthopaedics.
