From Which Medical Device

The Elektra prosthesis is a device for the treatment of trapeziometacarpal osteoarthritis.  The bearing is metal on metal, the device is uncemented and it is indicated for both rheumatoid and osteoarthritis.  The socket comes in cobalt chrome and a bi-material (CoCr/TA6V).

In a review of 39 prostheses in 37 patients, Klahn et al demonstrated a 17/38 (44%) revision rate after 72 months, predominantly with loosening of the trapezial component (1). Hernadez-Cortez et al also reported loosening of the trapezial component in a longitudinal study of 19 prostheses (2).
