Description

From Which Medical Device

The METS Coned Hemi-Pelvis Implant System from Stanmore Implants is designed for pelvic reconstruction after periacetabular resection. The device has a titanium shell with a hydroxyapatite coated fluted stem for insertion into the remaining iliac wing adjacent to the sacro-iliac joint. Fixation is augmented with screws, Steinmann pins and methylmethacrylate cement containing antibiotics. The stem comes in 4 stem diameters.

A cemented large bearing acetabular component is placed into the shell which is large enough to accommodate sockets of up to 50mm outer diameter. The stability of the reconstruction can be enhanced by the use of a MUTARS attachment tube or similar device.

A Custom version is also available.

Fisher et al have reported a high complication rate in a series of 27 patients treated with this implant, which likely relates to the complexity of the surgery rather than the reconstruction itself. The most frequent complications were dislocation (14.8%) and deep infection (11.1%).1 They had one failure in a patient with less than 3cm of bone remaining in the iliac crest and reported a cost of £1775 for the implant.
