Description

From Which Medical Device

The GMK knee is a knee replacement system from Medacta. The system includes a unicompartmental knee, fixed, mobile and semiconstrained primary versions and a revision system. Cemented and uncemented versions are available.

The system has been conceived as an evolution of two pre-existing systems, the Evolis fixed bearing knee and the Cinetique mobile bearing system, both of which have been in use for some years.

The design is relatively bone sparing – the distal and posterior cuts are 8mm, the same as Stryker’s Triathlon knee, but less than the DePuy’s PFC knee. The geometry includes a 4 degree anterior cut to reduce the risk of anterior femoral notching. The femoral component is a “j-curve” in cross-section, with a reduced radius in flexion. The trochlear groove is anatomic, or orientated in the direction of the quadriceps pull.

There are no published results for the GMK knee, but early results with 1 year of follow up from a 5 centre pilot study are available from the manufacturer. The 7th report of the UK National Joint Registry (2010) recorded 34 implantations of the device.

The primary knee is available with MyKnee Patient Matched Instrumentation. This is a customised jig system in which CT or MRI images are used to plan ideal resection planes on a web-based platform (the MyKnee website). The jigs produced include slots for the proximal tibial and distal femoral resection planes. The femoral jig has two holes for the placement of fixation pegs for the chamfer cuts.

Medacta have a navigation system, known as iMNS which can be used for the implantation of the GMK knee.
