Microwave ablation
This short video shows ablation of a small renal transplant RCC. This is the same patient who had the ' open microwave ablation' . This tumour lies in the anterior hilar lip and is immediately adjacent to a branch of the renal artery. The ablation took under 10 minutes from start to finish with approx 30 minutes of CT time. This would not have been achievable with cryotherapy in this time. I initially aimed for 60 seconds then extended this out to 100 seconds followed by track ablation. This 4 minute video shows the use of the Emprint microwave ablation device to ablate a small renal cell carcinoma in a renal transplant. We decided that an open procedure may be safer as the bowel was draped and probably stuck over the anterior surface of the transplant. The options then were to either balloon occlude the artery to allow partial nephectomy as the vessels were located deep and were hard to access to clamp, or ablate the tumour whilst the bowel was displaced at open surgery. Percutanous ablation was also possible but we felt may have been more risky as there was a high...
This video clip shows the extreme visibility of the Emprint ablation needle on ultrasound. I presume this is due to the cooling jacket around the metal causing increased reflection of the US beam. Dr Phil Haslam, Consultant Interventional Radiologist, Freeman Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK
