Description

From Which Medical Device

The Cormet 2000 hip resurfacing is manufactured from cast cobalt chromium molybdenum. The acetabular component has a plasma sprayed titanium coating (Corin’s Bi-coat) and has an equatorially expanded geometry with anti-rotation fins. The femoral component comes in both cemented and uncemented variants. The double heat treatment of the components has been the subject of some debate.

The device received FDA approval in 2007 and has been marketed in the United States by Stryker.

The device was the third most implanted in the England and Wales National Joint Registry in 2008, with 12% of the market, and has an ODEP 5B rating. The 5 year revision rate in this report was 10.0% (range 8.2 to 12.1%), compared to 4.3% (3.8% to 4.9%) for the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing, and 12.0% (9.3% to 15.4%) for the ASR hip resurfacing. The 2010 Australian Joint Registry demonstrated a 12.8% (8.0% to 20.1%) revision rate at 7 years, compared to 4.9% (4.4% to 5.5%) for the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing and a five year revision rate of 10.9% (8.7% to 13.6%) for the ASR. Another study quotes a 96.2% survival at 9 years (Unitt L et al).
