The Smith and Nephew CPCS (Collarless Polished Cemented Stem) is a polished tapered femoral component, available in cobalt chrome and stainless steel versions. The design incorporates a “triple taper” meaning that not only does the femoral stem narrow from proximal to distal in the antero-posterior and lateral planes but also narrows proximally in cross section from lateral to medial, the concept being to improve proximal load transfer and reduce stress shielding. This is similar to the C-stem (DePuy) but different to the Exeter stem (Stryker), which has a double taper only.
The CPCS comes in standard (131 degrees) and high (125 degrees) offset versions, with six available sizes of each. There are seven sizes of centralizer. The taper is a standard 12/14 taper with a cobalt chrome, stainless steel and zirconia head options.
Instrumentation includes a broach to which a trial neck can be attached for trial reduction.
RSA studies suggest that the triple taper design may be associated with less subsidence than the double taper of the Exeter stem (McCalden et al).
The seventh report of the UK National Joint Registry reported 506 implantations, representing 2% of the market. The device has an ODEP 3A rating.
